Bücher | 6 female Gothic-Books – von “Belladonna” bis “Gallant”

Gothic Fiction ist eher eine lose literarische Ästhetik als ein tatsächliches Subgenre der Horror-Literatur. Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichten stehen “haunting“-Ereignisse – Angst, Spuk und Heimsuchung. Der Name kommt von der gotischen Architektur des europäischen Mittelalters, da im 20. Jahrhundert, als die Gothic Fiction sich gerade entwickelte, die meisten dieser Geschichten in Europa spielten. Mittlerweile gibt es Gothic-Books mit Schauplätzen an allen möglichen Orten, charakteristisch ist aber immer noch das Thema der subtilen Angst, eine Bedrohung durch übernatürliche Ereignisse und eine meist düstere Vergangenheit, die die Gegenwart stark beeinflusst oder die Heimsuchung, die eine Charakter erfährt. Besonders populär ist aktuell “Female Gothic”, also klassische Spukromane mit weiblichen Protagonisten. Sechs passende Bücher stelle ich euch in diesem Artikel vor.

Da “Gothic-Books” noch nicht so ganz in Deutschland angekommen sind, gibt es leider die meisten der Bücher (noch) nicht auf Deutsch. Wenn eine deutsche Übersetzung vorhanden ist, ist diese natürlich auch verlinkt!

Gallant. Im Garten der Schatten – V.E. Schwab

Eine mysteriöse und düstere Geschichte voller Geister, Tod & Geheimnisse. Die Protagonistin Olivia Prior wächst in einem Waisenhaus auf, in dem auch die Erzählung ihren Anfang nimmt. “Gallant” ist schön düster und sehr atmosphärisch geschrieben. Persönlich hätte ich mir mehr Spannung erhofft, aber viele andere im Buchclub fanden das Tempo der Geschichte genau richtig.

Über das Buch: Olivia Prior ist in einem Waisenhaus aufgewachsen. Ihren Vater hat sie nie getroffen, und die Stimme ihrer Mutter hat sie schon längst vergessen. Geblieben ist ihr nur das Tagebuch ihrer Mutter. Es ist voller Rätsel und seltsamer Zeichnungen, die sie eines Tages zu enträtseln hofft. Ihr Leben in dem Heim ist alles andere als einfach, denn sie kann nicht sprechen und kommuniziert mit Hilfe einer alten Schiefertafel. Außerdem sieht sie die Geister der Toten, die ewig stumm das Treiben der Lebenden beobachten. Angst vor ihnen hat sie nicht, schon weil sich Olivia selbst fühlt wie lebendig begraben. Doch alles ändert sich, als ein Brief ihres Onkels in der Schule eintrifft, der sie einlädt, zum Stammsitz ihrer Familie zu kommen. Für Olivia ist es eine einmalige Chance, mehr über das Schicksal ihrer Eltern herauszufinden. Doch sie ahnt: Der Preis, den sie dafür zu zahlen hat, wird hoch sein …

The Devil Makes Three – Tori Bovalino

Wer Lust hat auf ein Crossover aus Young Adult & Gothic-Horror ist bei “The Devil Makes Three” genau richtig. Es gibt Teen-Romance, übernatürliche Spannung, ein bisschen Humor und High School Feels. Auch wenn es den Anschein hat: “The Devil Makes Three” ist kein klassisches “Dark Academia”-Buch und leider gibt es aktuell noch keine deutsche Übersetzung.

Über das Buch: When Tess and Eliot stumble upon an ancient book hidden in a secret tunnel beneath their school library, they accidentally release a devil from his book-bound prison. To stay free, he’ll manipulate, murder and bleed into every inch of Tess’s life until his freedom is permanent. Library of the Unwritten – A.J. Hackwith

Jeder Bücherwurm kennt es: eine nicht vollendete Buchreihe ist die Hölle. Aber was ist eigentlich mit Büchern, die von ihren Autoren nicht beendet wurden? In “Library of the Unwritten” landen sie im “ungeschriebenen Flügel” der Bibliothek des Teufels und ihre ruhelose Charaktere steigen aus den Seiten hervor. Wem der Teufel in “The Devil makes Three” also noch nicht genug war, kann mit “Library of the Unwritten” direkt weiter abtauchen in die teuflischen Untiefen zwischen den Seiten. The Bone House – Emily Lloyd-Jones

Ein Indie-Titel aus dem Bereich der Gothic-Books: “The Bone House” ist für alle Buffy-Fans der ersten Staffeln – ein bisschen Märchen & viel klassischer Horror. Das Buch ist leider ebenfalls noch nicht in deutscher Sprache verfügbar.

Über das Buch: Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead. The Hacienda – Isabel Cañas

“The Hacienda” wird oft als “Mexican Gothic” meets “Rebecca” (1940er Psychothriller von Hitchock) bezeichnet. “Mexican Gothic” habe ich bisher noch nicht gelesen, der Vergleich mit “Rebecca” ist aber aufgrund des düsteren, abgelegenen Anwesens, das das Zentrum der Story bildet, sehr zutreffend. Die Geschichte spielt nach Ende des mexikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges. Auch hier gibt es noch keine deutsche Übersetzung.

Belladonna – Adalyn Grace

Für die Dark Romance-Fans ist “Belladonna” (und der Folgeband “Foxglove”) ein guter Tipp. Die Story hat einen netten Twist, der Plot ist zwar nicht herausragend, macht aber Spaß – also rundum ein “fun read” für alle, die es düster mögen. Das Buch wird zwar als Jugendbuch kategorisiert, aber erst ab ca. 14 Jahre empfohlen und ich denke, dass diese Empfehlung auch eingehalten werden sollte.

Über das Buch: Orphaned as a baby, nineteen-year-old Signa has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her wellbeing – and each has met an untimely end. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, an estate both glittering and gloomy. Its patriarch mourns his late wife through wild parties, while his son grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and his daughter suffers from a mysterious illness.
